Orateur : SEAMUS HEANEY
Seamus Heaney a reçu le prix Nobel de littérature en 1995 "pour des œuvres d'une beauté lyrique et d'une grande profondeur, qui exalte les miracles de tous les jours et le vivant passé". Tout en étant un brillant poète, Heaney est un grand critique littéraire et un défenseur des bibliothèques. Il a reçu de nombreux prix, y compris le livre de l'année Whitbread en 1997 pour le "Spirit level" et de nouveau en 2001 pour sa nouvelle traduction de Beowulf. Il a obtenu un premier diplôme en anglais de la Queen's University à Belfast, puis enseigne dans cette université de 1966 à 1972, jouant un grand rôle dans le nouvelle génération des écrivains irlandais. Il fut professeur de poésie à Oxford Université de 1989 à 1994 et est l'actuel "poète en résidence" Ralph Waldo Emerson à l'université Harvard. Sa dernière "Electric light" a été publiée par Faber en avril 2001.
Tous les participants sont invités pour le café dans le hall d'exposition après la cérémonie d'ouverture.

Numériser les cartes pour les petites bibliothèques et les collections d'histoire locale
- Cet atelier discutera les stratégies des petites bibliothèques et les collections historiques pour créer des images de leurs collections de cartes. Quels sont les moyens minimaux pour scanneriser les cartes, graphiques, tables et autres formats d'information dense, les fichiers d'images, les metadata, la résolution, les médias de stockage et de distribution et les solutions techniques pour densifier l'information visuelle et pour résoudre les problèmes de scannerisation. Une attention particulière sera portée sur l'identification du contenu des documents pour un meilleur usage des lecteurs.

184a. ERPANET et l'IFLA
Cette rèunion portera sur deux sujets importants pour les bibliothèques : la continuation de la mémoire culturelle et la relation entre la préservation numérique et l'enseignement. Elle offrira aux participants de l'IFLA la possibilité de s'informer sur les problèmes relatifs à la préservation et à l'accès aux ressources numériques grâce à ERPANET (http://www.erpanet.org/). Elle permettra aux bibliothécaires de discuter les questions posées par le succès d'une préservation à long terme et par l'accès aux notices électroniques. Elle permettra d'apporter une information sur ERPANET et de promouvoir une collaboration avec ce réseau financé par le Information Society Technologies
programme.
Les orateurs seront un historien, un bibliothécaire et un homme de culture. Des documents seront distribués à tous les participants de l'IFLA. ERPANET tiendra aussi un forum pour développer son travail dans le domaine de la préservation numérique pour les bibliothèques.

Soumettre des communications
Le contenu du congrès de l'IFLA est organisé par différents groupes professionnels (sections et tables rondes). Toutes les communications doivent être proposées à l'un de ces groupes [http://www.ifla.org/act-serv.htm] qui doit être contacté directement si vous souhaitez présenter une communication. Chaque groupe, cependant a son propre mécanisme pour demander des communications, ses propres dates limites et modes de sélection.
Les auteurs des communications acceptées recevront une invitation officielle au congrès, mais les frais de voyage et les autres coûts (inscription et hôtel) ne peuvent être pris en charge par l'IFLA. Ils sont à la charge de l'orateur.
